Remove the husk from the seeds, cut it into quarters, and add it to a bowl.
Put the husks in a saucepan with a little water and bring to a boil.
Cook until the huskins break down into a syrup-like consistency.
(It will take about 20 minutes for the syrup to form.)
If the syrup doesn’t come together easily, simmer for 30 minutes.
Add the spices, ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, and salt to the syrup and stir to combine.
While the syrup is simmering, heat a nonstick pan over medium heat.
Add a little of the syrup mixture to the pan and place it in the pan over low heat.
(You’ll need about 1/2 cup of the mixture.)
Stir to dissolve the syrup.
Add more syrup, if needed, and simmer until thickened.
Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
Stir in the remaining syrup mixture and set aside.
The best way to make a silk pj is to buy a few and make them in batches.
If using, let them cool and refrigerate them.
To make the syrup, stir together 1 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of corn syrup, 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder, and 1 teaspoon of ground ginger.
Place the mixture in a large mixing bowl and whisk together.
Then add the remaining ingredients and stir until well combined.
Add in a pinch of salt and blend until smooth.
Once smooth, pour into a glass jar and shake until thoroughly coated.
Make silk pJs in batches, but be careful not to overmix.
3/4 Cup of sugar is all that’s needed for a good silk pij.
